I still don’t know what to think of Public Enemies. It’s hard not to love the idea of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale facing off in a classic cops versus gangsters duel, that should be enough to sell it. Except there’s director Michael Mann and his somewhat offputting, digital video style. It worked well on Collateral but in some of the clips from Public Enemies it’s jarring. It seems out of place in a period piece.
