Rachel McAdams has bowed out of the film, leading The Weinstein Company to withdraw their financial support on the film and subsequently remove the release date off the schedule entirely.
Set to be directed by Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones) from a script written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), Passengers will take place aboard a huge spacecraft transporting thousands of citizens to a distant planet in the early stages of colonization. Due to a malfunction in one of the ship’s sleep chambers, one lone passenger (Reeves) wakes up 90 years before he is supposed to.
Of all people, Keanu Reeves has been very busy at the Cannes Film Festival this past week, with two of his upcoming pictures landing distribution deals that will have the dramatic actor back on screen in the near future and starring in features that couldn’t be more different.
The plot will focus on a giant spacecraft transporting thousands of humans to another soon-to-be colonized planet. Something within the ship malfunctions, and Reeves’ character is woken up 90 years too early.
