Could Twilight Get More Sequels? Here's What The Studio Says

Twilight

Believe it or not, it's been almost five years since we last saw everyone's favorite sparkly vampires on the silver screen. Since its inception, the Twilight saga has been seen as beloved, reviled and iconic all at once for its unique combination of teen love, teen angst and the well-known supernatural tropes. The franchise seemingly closed out its story with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2, but could it possibly return? According to Lionsgate co-chairman Patrick Wachsberger, it's not outside the realm of possibility. Wachsberger explained:

It's a possibility. Not a certainty but it's a possibility. It's about Stephenie [novelist Stephenie Meyer]. If she wants to tell a story related to those characters we're here for her.

Patrick Wachsberger recently spoke to ScreenDaily and admitted that the ball is really in author Stephenie Meyer's court with regards to another entry in the Twilight saga. If Meyer wants to go down that road, then the folks at Lionsgate will be there to support such a decision. Although plenty of recent silver screen young adult adaptations (Harry Potter, Hunger Games, etc.) ended on fairly definitive notes, the Twilight series actually still has plenty of narrative threads still in play. If Stephenie Meyer wanted to pick up the story of Edward and Bella several years after the events of Breaking Dawn -- Part 2, it wouldn't be terribly difficult for her to do so.

That being said, if the Twilight series did ever return to theaters, we could likely expect to see some serious changes with regards to the cast. Both Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have vocally expressed disinterest in returning to their respective characters as Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. Additionally, their high-profile breakup in 2012 would probably prevent them from wanting to work with one another.

Of course, that's not necessarily a deal breaker when it comes to a franchise like this. Lionsgate could always recast the principal characters in the Twilight saga and proceed as if nothing happened; it just seems increasingly likely that future movies will look and feel considerably different from what we've already seen.

Even if Lionsgate doesn't proceed with any more Twilight movies, it still has plenty more potential franchises waiting in the wings. From The Kingkiller Chronicle to Chaos Walking, the studio very clearly has a vested interest in investing money and resources into properties that can be turned into long-term series; whether or not that means more Twilight films will come out remains to be seen.

Cinema Blend will keep you up to date regarding any and all relevant details related to a possible sixth Twilight movie as more information becomes available to us. It's not a guarantee at this point, but we're sure that plenty of passionate fans out there would love to see such a project materialize in the very near future. Stay tuned for more details!
