Why DC's Nightwing Movie Didn’t Make Any Announcements At Comic-Con, According To The Director

Nightwing

To say that DC Films is busy is a bit of an understatement. The film studio is working on tons of projects right now, which they made sure to let everyone know at San Diego Comic-Con a few weeks ago. During the Warner Bros. panel, they announced a list of upcoming films like The Batman, Wonder Woman 2, Batgirl, Justice League Dark, and Flashpoint (!), but some took notice that there was no mention of the announced Nightwing film. According to director Chris McKay, the answer for that is pretty simple: they just didn't have anything to share yet.

I've turned down films because they were backed into a release date that made it difficult to make a great film. This isn't going to be like that. I want this movie to blow you away. We need time to get it right.

Warner Bros. was happy to put out its upcoming DC film slate at Comic-Con, but that was only for projects being developed to come out over the next few years. It looks like fans will have to wait a little longer for that Nightwing movie to hit theaters. Director Chris McKay is developing the film and he was asked on Twitter why there was no mention of the film at all at the panel. McKay replied back basically saying that they can't show something they don't have yet. Nightwing is still in the earliest stages of development and it's a bit too soon to be announcing a release date or making casting decisions. McKay wants this to, you know, be a good movie and that takes time.

Chris McKay and Warner Bros. seem to be playing this one smart. It obviously makes more sense to take time developing a full project than rushing through the process and risk making a sub par movie. DC movies don't really need any more of those, and this just means that Nightwing will have more potential when it eventually does make it to theaters.

Not much is known about that Nightwing movie right now, but Chris McKay has spoken about what he hopes for the movie and why he likes the character of Dick Grayson so much. The movie will be an action packed character piece that needs full commitment from whoever gets cast in the title role. McKay has always been fascinated with the self-made quality of Nightwing, which is why he thinks he's capable of holding a movie.

There is no release date for Nightwing as of yet. Stick with CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated on all the latest DC and movie news as soon as that information becomes available. For all the movies hitting theaters for the rest of the year, check out our 2017 movie release guide.
