Zack Snyder’s next big-screen effort, The Last Photograph, is set to hit theaters in 2027, but the director has kept his fanbase active and talkative with a slew of throwback pics of Henry Cavill’s Superman and other reminders of his DCEU days. (It being the 10th anniversary of Batman v Superman helped.) Just this week, he showed up at the Warner Bros. studio lot and sparked a ton of speculation about the reasoning behind him showing up.
As it happens, Snyder wasn’t there to chat up WB heads about new projects for DC characters, or reworking any of his past projects involving DC characters. Instead, according to Page Six, he was on hand to host a screening of the 1981 sword-and-sorcery epic Excalibur, helmed by John Boorman, that was held only for Warner staff members, and reportedly without any cameras allowed.
That outcome is quite the disappointing reveal for anyone sincerely hoping that Snyder was teasing something more fruitful with his pic in front of the iconic water tower. There may be some semblance of truth to theorizing that his return to WB (five years after that relationship soured in 2021) was a show of support for the studio amidst the legal hullabaloo regarding Paramount’s merger attempts, but it’s hard to know for sure.
That said, the outlet points out that beyond the screening, Snyder may have had an ulterior motive for his Burbank trip.
The Lowkey Reason Why Zack Snyder May Have Met With WB Execs
Zack Snyder's past issues with Warner Bros. were mainly tied to the Powers That Be who were eventually replaced by current studio bosses Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy. That duo reportedly gave the director a "hero's welcome" along with the rest of the staff, and they engaged Snyder in a Q&A after the screening.
It's reported that this meet-up could also help pave the way for Snyder's divisive remake plans for John Carpenter's Escape from New York that he brought up earlier this summer as a project he wants to bring to life. And following the WB event, Page Six notes that "it should come as no surprise" if any news updates point to Warner Bros. adding Escape from New York to its slate of upcoming movies.
Granted, there was already movement made on that front in December when CANAL+ entered into a multi-year agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery. CANAL+ is the parent company of StudioCanal, which is where Snyder's Escape remake is currently happening, so there's the possibility that Snake Plissken's return was imminent even without the Excalibur staff screening.
Could more projects come from this reteaming of the minds down the line? Surely, but it's way too early to start speculating on THAT. Maybe give it another week or so.
