Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar - as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, retractable claws and a primal fury. Leading up to the events of X-Men, X-Men Origins: Wolverine tells the story of Wolverine's epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe whose appearances in the film series have long been anticipated.

Wolverine WAS and STILL IS one of the most popular comic book characters of all time. Back in the 80's (probably before your time), his character boosted sales of X-MEN comics to legendary status. Without Wolverine, there would probably be no X-MEN movies today.
This could end up being just like the other X-MEN films, just without the baggage of the other teammates. How in the hell Wolverine ended up with primary character status in the trilogy is beyond me. Why they couldn't have focused a bit more on maybe Cyclops or even added, say, Gambit to the team is troubling. In the nineties cartoon and other media that I have been exposed to, Wolverine wasn't even one of the most inteigueing members of Xavier's squad.
