We were all worried about Dwayne Johnson for a while there, weren't we? Even I, with my deep-seated disinterest in anything related to wrestling, soon found myself charmed and impressed by this "Rock" fellow. He could play the beefy action guy, but often with a little self-deprecating wink and a surprising amount of brains lurking behind the biceps. Hell, he even proved he could be genuinely funny when he wanted to be. But then he made Race to Witch Mountain and The Tooth Fairy and it looked like we might be losing him to a career spent appearing in mediocre-to-crappy movies "his kids could watch" (known in the industry as "pulling an Eddie Murphy").

Thankfully, he rallied with a brief role in this past summer's The Other Guys, playing alongside Samuel L. Jackson as the nigh-invincible golden boys who occupied the opposite end of the spectrum from Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg's, well, other guys. Johnson and Jackson's performances were one of the best parts of the movie, and their memorable final moments absolutely were the best part of the movie. But still, despite Dwayne having a proven knack for good-naturedly mocking the action he-man roles he could easily be playing straight in other roles...was there no room in this brave new world for a Dwayne Johnson who simply kicked ass and lacked bubble gum?

As if in answer, the universe has provided us with Faster, a movie where Johnson plays...well, that doesn't really matter. All that's really important is that the trailer promises that he will drive cars in a reckless manner and kill people while scowling. Whether the movie lives up to that promise is up for debate, but it's nice to see the Rock giving it the old college try. You'll be able to judge for yourself when Faster fishtails onto Blu-ray ($34.95) and DVD ($24.96) March 1st. Now if I could just hear the title of the movie without reflexively adding "Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" to the end of it.
