Get A Dose Of Nurse Jackie On DVD

Starring The Sopranos' Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie is a bleakly funny look at a hospital full of medical professionals who have taken that early House marketing slogan to heart: just because they heal you doesn't mean they like you. Between Jackie's drug addictions, marital indiscretions, and general disdain for the god-complexed doctors she works with, I can understand why this show might not be a favorite of the AMA.

If you haven't taken the Hippocratic Oath, your enjoyment will likely depend on your tolerance for dark humor, hard-to-like characters, and variations on the same medical scenarios we've been watching for decades. Sure, Nurse Jackie isn't necessarily the most original show, but Falco does give a bang-up, critically acclaimed performance that's worth watching. But given that the first episode finds the pill-popping nurse flushing a diplomatically immune jackass' severed ear down the toilet, I doubt this will be the medical show to finally win my doctor father-in-law over.

Lionsgate is bringing the complete first season of Nurse Jackie to DVD and Blu-ray February 23rd. The set will include "extensive commentaries," interviews, and featurettes including "Prepping Nurse Jackie," "All About Edie," "Unsung Heroes" and "Nurse Stories." It's a purchase that will make you laugh, although it might lessen your chances of ever going to the doctor again.
