God Of War Bloopers Reel Shows Everything That Goes Wrong Making Video Games

It's rare we get to see blooper reels for video games. I know it's not the same as making a live-action movie (sometimes), but mishaps still happen and it would be nice to see them every once in a while. Santa Monica Studios decided to oblige the curiosity of gamers who enjoy a little sneak peek behind the curtain to see what some of the bloopers were like for God of War. Warning: There are spoilers ahead, so if you don't want the game ruined, you might want to look away.

The video was posted on the official PlayStation YouTube channel, featuring three and a half minutes of never-before-seen footage from the development cutting room floor.

In the very first scene, within the first 30 seconds of the video, we see Atreus during one of the many solemn moments shared between him and his father Kratos, where the kid seems to be scrunching his face up randomly and for no reason. Creative director Cory Barlog is in the corner of the screen talking about how, for no reason at all, Atreus' face just keeps scrunching up and it looks like he's having some sort of nervous fit, or there's a bug that crawled up his ear and he's trying hard to ignore it but can't. Another clip shows Atreus repeatedly and constantly talking about their being lots of draugr in the area. Yes, he says it a lot in the actual game, but in the clip, while he's holding on to Kratos' back, he just repeatedly keeps talking about the draugr in a very annoying and ridiculous way.

Some of the Atreus glitches are funny, though, like when he takes off full speed like The Flash and blazes around an enemy. And, speaking of The Flash, some of the combat glitches included Kratos pummeling Baldur with lightning fast fists, or his body deforming while throwing the axe.

Most of the God of War glitches are the kind of glitches you would expect from a game in development, but I think one of the funniest parts in the video is the dance-off section where the characters jitter and glitch as if they're actually dancing, even though it's the kinematics not syncing properly with the mo-cap data.

Usually, when we see glitches like this from a game it's always unintentional; someone gets stuck and can't move forward and the characters glitch so they record it and share it on social media. Alternatively, some YouTuber will find all the glitches and make a compilation video for the community. It's rare that the developer opens up the hood and lets gamers peek inside the way they did with God of War.

Based on the amount of glitches and bugs they had to fix, it's amazing so few of them actually made it into the final release of the game. I'm sure Ubisoft wish it had that kind of quality assurance leading up to the release and post-release of Assassin's Creed: Unity.

I think most PlayStation 4 gamers are just happy that they get to see some of the funny bloopers that went into making God of War, and are even happier that most of those glitches didn't make it into the final game. Of course, I don't think gamers would have minded too much seeing the troll taking a swing at Atreus during the cinematics, as it's an unintentionally funny moment with hilarious results.
