By now, it's likely you've become quite familiar with Mighty No. 9, game creator Keiji Inafune's spiritual successor to the legendary Mega Man series. Well, following a way-more-than-successful Kickstarter campaign, the team at Comcept is now hard at work on the game, and even sharing a few background details about the ongoing process.

As we announced back in August, Inafune and Capcom haven't been seeing eye to eye for quite some time and, as a result, it looks like the Mega Man series has been more or less shelved for the time being.

The problem with that is that Inafune loves the series and the types of games that come out of it. As a result, he and his studio have set out to make a game that is openly similar to the Blue Bomber's adventures, starring an new robotic hero and a new crop of mechanical enemies to turn to scrap. If I'm being honest, Mighty No. 9 looks like Mega Man being dragged kicking and screaming into the new generation and, while I would probably prefer if it was just another MM game, I can certainly get behind what Comcept is putting together.

It looks like the rest of the world agrees, as the Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter surpassed its initial goal of $900,000 in just a single day, eventually going on to claim $2,635,920 as of this printing. There's still four days left in the promotion, too, and these types of projects typically skyrocket as the zero hour approaches.

Mighty No. 9 has already blasted past many of its stretch goals, too, including additional stages, Mac/Linux, PS3, 360 and Wii versions of the game, a making-of documentary, boss rush mode, challenge mode and more. The next stretch goal is just around the corner at $2,750,000 and will add an online co-op challenge mode. If the Kickstarter hits $3,300,000, the game will also arive on the PS4 and Xbox One. At $3,500,000, Vita and 3DS versions are a lock.

Mark MacDonald dropped by the PlayStation Blog this morning to fill folks in who might not have heard about the Kickstarter campaign just yet, explaining that Mighty No. 9 is headed our way come Spring of 2015.

“As the titular hero (known as Beck), you'll need to run, jump and blast your way through your fellow Mighty Number robots, stealing their powers to fuel your unique skill to transform your body into new shapes for added abilities,” MacDonald said.

So, yeah, like I said, basically a Mega Man game for the new generation. The blog post is full of useful details to get folks pumped for the game, even if the wait on said game is super long. Still, maybe it'll help tide you over until next week when the Kickstarter campaign runs out and we can finally get an end tally on this “Mighty” funding drive.
