We’ve had our fair share of shocks this season on Shrinking. From Paul giving away his practice to Derek almost dying, we've gone through many emotional twists. Thankfully, this week’s twist for Liz and Derek was a pretty happy one, as they found out they were going to be grandparents. However, that announcement was made unexpectedly, as their son Connor revealed that his brother Will and his girlfriend were expecting. So, with all that in mind, I had to ask Christa Miller and Ted McGinley how they reacted to the news that was dropped on their characters.
In this episode of this great Apple TV show, Liz and Derek play tough parents during their meeting with Will and his girlfriend. However, the second he leaves, Christa Miller and Ted McGinley’s characters get so excited. They cannot wait to have this baby and be young grandparents. Overall, I was a bit shocked by how they reacted to it all, so I asked Miller if she expected them to respond this way. Here's what she said:
Um, no, because if it was me personally, oh my god, I would not have had that reaction. So it's funny. I think – how I made it work for myself, I think Will is their one boy that has it together and has a job and would make it work, and [he’s] probably the most responsible. But of course, it's Liz, of course, she like, doesn't care about any other consequences, or they're too young, or whatever. She's just thrilled.

She’s right, in the episode that just aired on the 2026 TV schedule, Liz is elated by the idea that she and Derek will get to essentially raise this baby.
However, Derek was not so on board with the idea. As he said, “I don’t wanna raise Will’s baby.” McGinley’s character just wants to be a “normal” grandpa, and after his medical emergency earlier this season, he has a new lease on life. And frankly, that does not include them being super involved grandparents. But when I asked McGinley about this development, he clarified that Liz will ultimately be running this show:
Obviously, that's a situation that Liz is going to take over and run, right? And it doesn't really matter what Derek has to say, but the second she leaves the room, and Derek has a baby alone, it'll be a different story. So that's just the way I can imagine it going, but I will be told a lot how it's going to go.
Now, both Miller and McGinley have grown children of their own. So, they responded to this development from a personal perspective, too. As she said above, the Scrubs actress would have had a different reaction than Liz did if one of her kids surprised her with a pregnancy. Meanwhile, the Married…with Children actor said:
You know, I have two boys of my own, and I'm not a grandpa yet, and I'm looking forward to that day, if, God willing, it happens. But no pressure. We're not in – I was just saying that life is this journey. Don't rush it. It's not getting there. It's enjoying the ride. And so that's sort of what my wife and I are going with.
I love that mentality, and I imagine it’s similar to the one Derek will be going with in Season 4 of Shrinking. Seeing as the show’s already been renewed, we’ll likely get to see Liz be a loveable yet overbearing grandma (I’d guess the vibe will be similar to how she was with Brian’s baby, Sutton) while her husband is likely a supportive and very enthusiastic grandpa.
