Spoilers ahead for Netflix's The Last House.
It's been a great summer for fans of scary movies, with titles like Obsession and Backrooms both crushing at the box office. Those with a Netflix subscription have just been treated to the release of Louis Leterrier's new science-fiction thriller The Last House, which stars The Morning Show's Greta Lee and Wagner Moura. And the latter spoke to CinemaBlend about the movie's ending, and what he thinks comes next for the Delgado family.
During The Last House's 110-minute runtime, we watch as the Delgado Family is mysteriously trapped in their home for years at a time. While it looks like the rain is somehow locking everyone inside, it later becomes clear that underwater creatures are actually responsible. The family eventually escapes and is spared after showing kindness to one of the monsters. As you can see above, I asked Moura what he thought happened to the Delgados after they got out of the house and began exploring the newly flooded world, and he told me:
Well, I hope they discover that of course, the world changed. But I hope that they discover that there are good things about that change. I think that we came out of COVID when, when COVID sort of happened in the end of the whole pandemic, I was like, 'Okay, the world is gonna change. We are gonna come out of this with a different mindset.' And I don't think we did. So I hope it's different for the characters of the film.
I'm not going to lie, I couldn't help but think about sheltering in place during COVID while I was watching The Last House. Of course, the movie's central characters are in an even more precarious position, running out of food and hiding from the terrifying creatures that were right outside their (unopenable) door. But the Delgagos became a united front by fighting for survival, something that would no doubt influence them moving forward.
The Last House might be one of the best horror movies on Netflix, thanks to its unique and original story. The movie's time jump threw me for a loop, as did the happy ending where the Delgados connect with the creatures... and basically save the rest of mankind in the process.
The final moments of The Last House show a changed world, one that's been flooded thanks to years of rain. But Ruth's narration reveals that there were more people who survived, and that the creatures are out there somewhere below the ocean surface. Deciding to show empathy to one of the monsters seems like it lowkey ended the apocalypse, and I'd love a sequel or follow-up project that shows what happened to the Delgados after their terrifying affair was over.
The Last House is streaming now on Netflix as part of the 2026 movie release list. Fingers crossed we get a sequel one day to see if Moura was right about what happened to the Delgado Family.
