Whoever ends up directing the still untitled Bond 24 will have some pretty big expectations to live up to. Sam Mendes' work on Skyfall was absolutely masterful, and the film will not only go down in history as one of the franchise's best, but also one of its most beautiful. But the folks over at Eon and Sony are hard at working finding a name suitable for the position, and according to Variety they're looking at some top tier names.
The trade has reported a shortlist of filmmakers that the studios is currently contemplating for the director's chair, and the tally includes names like Iron Man 3's Shane Black, Les Miserables' Tom Hooper, Harry Potter's David Yates, and Life of Pi's Ang Lee. Also in the running is Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, who confirmed to First Showing at the Cannes Film Festival that he has been having discussions about the possibility of helming the project. It's pointed out that it may still be a while before a name a chosen, as they are not only still meeting with other potential candidates, but also working on a deal with star Daniel Craig. Variety says that the actor will likely be getting a big payday with this film and will also probably get director approval.
John Logan, whose previous credits include Skyfall as well as Hugo, Rango, The Aviator and Gladiator, is currently working on the script. As you may have guessed, we're still a few years away from actually seeing Bond 24, but the film is expected to be released in 2016.
