There isn’t a single directors job in Hollywood right now bigger than the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. After it was announced a little while back that Gary Ross would not be coming back for part two you could practically hear all of the phone calls coming out of LA from agents trying to get their clients the in-demand gig. With production gearing up to start in the second half of this year, Lionsgate is going to need to find someone soon so that the puzzle pieces can start being put in place. Today it seems the race has gotten a bit clearer.
According to The Playlist, two names that have been at least brought up in conversation in connection to Catching Fire are Bennett Miller and Francis Lawrence. Miller is coming off one of the best years of his career, having helmed the Oscar-nominated baseball drama Moneyball. Lawrence most recently made Water For Elephants, which wasn’t quite as lauded, but did have a stellar cast that included Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz.
While Lawrence has a number of projects on his plate but would probably jump at the chance to direct Catching Fire, Miller is more of a question mark. The filmmaker is currently in pre-production on Foxcatcher, a movie that he has been developing for years now that already has Steve Carell and Channing Tatum attached (it was also reported yesterday that Mark Ruffalo is in talks). If he were to be offered the Hunger Games sequel then he would potentially have to make a choice, and given his passion for Foxcatcher that may not be an easy decision.
