There is an impressive number of R-rated comedies coming out this summer. Seth Rogen and Zac Efron will be kicking things off in early May when they face off in the comedy Neighbors, but we also have Seth McFarlane's A Million Ways To Die In The West, Phil Lord and Chris Miller's 22 Jump Street, Tammy with Melissa McCarthy and the Jake Johnson/Damon Wayans Jr. vehicle Let's Be Cops set to come out in the next few months. We have seen trailers for all of those movies by this point, but now we have coming in a premiere spot for yet another adult-oriented summer comedy: Jake Kasdan's Sex Tape.
Based on a script by Kate Angelo (The Back-up Plan), the new movie centers on Annie (Cameron Diaz) and Jay (Jason Segel) a married couple that is comfortable and happy with a family, but lacking any real spark. With the kids away for the night, Annie suggests that she and Jay create a sex tape that they hope will bring some fervor back into their bedroom antics. This plan goes horribly wrong, however, when Jay forgets to delete the video and it accidentally syncs up to the cloud, meaning that it gets transferred to all of the iPads that they gave to friends for Christmas. The couple then races around town to try and collect all of the tablets before it is to late.
I can't say that I particularly enjoyed this trailer, as the humor felt a bit flat and forced to me, but one thing in particular did strike me as odd: how was it that this couple was able to afford iPads for so many people? That's asking a pair of main characters to spend a whole lot of money just so that a plot makes just a tiny bit of sense. Hopefully the movie addresses this in some way, otherwise I can imagine a lot of people dismissing the whole thing with three simple words: "white people problems."
I didn't love this trailer, but I do still hold out hope for the movie. Not only is the supporting cast great - with Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper, Rob Lowe, Dave Gruber and a host of others - I will also say that I enjoyed Kasdan's 2011 movie Bad Teacher - which also featured some really good performances from both Segel and Diaz.
Sex Tape will be in theaters on July 25th.
