Scarlett Johansson has read the script for Captain America: Civil War, and guess what? It’s going to be like nothing we’ve ever seen before from a Marvel movie. I mean, that’s pretty much expected. The Russo brothers proved with The Winter Soldier that they are master craftsmen, and now they’re getting one of the most famous Marvel story arcs on which to put their mark. For Johansson, who will reprising her role of Black Widow, the most striking aspects of the film are the psychological twists.
The actress, who will appear as the kick-ass assassin-turned-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in Avengers: Age of Ultron, recently spoke with Collider for the film’s press junket and revealed a few intriguing tidbits about what to expect from the impending Civil War.
You know, the film has a very different feeling than anything of Marvel’s that I’ve read or been a part of before. These films are—I don’t think darker is the right word because there’s definitely always going to be some kind of levity, and that comes in a form of humor or hope. When you compare these films to like Batman, it’s a different feeling obviously, it’s a different audience experience, but as the stakes loom like larger and larger I think these films are kind of maturing with the audience; so there’s even more complex psychological twists that I sort of hadn’t necessarily anticipated.
Civil War won’t hit theaters until next year, but we already know a great deal about how high these stakes will be. Johansson reiterated her co-star Anthony Mackie in saying this film will act more as "a pre-Avengers 3 and 4," and that’s because this film will set the tone for Phase 3 and feature a ton of players. Following the events of Age of Ultron, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) will find themselves on opposite sides of a war. The government is ready to implement a law that would require all super-powered beings to reveal themselves and enlist with S.H.I.E.L.D. It looks like the film will follow the same trajectory as the comics, in that Captain America will vehemently oppose the law, while Iron Man defends it. This leads to an all out battle as our star-spangled Avenger goes on the run with like-minded heroes while the billionaire, playboy, philanthropist is in hot pursuit.
In addition to Black Widow and Falcon, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Crossbones (Frank Grillo) and Baron Xemo (reportedly Daniel Bruhl) will also feature in Civil War, while the MCU’s new Spider-Man is presumed to make his first appearance. Which side will these heroes take? Given all the mental manipulation that went into The Winter Soldier, we’re expecting the Russos to strategically keep their biggest cards close to the vest until the perfect moment. It'll be difficult to top the big Hydra reveal, but if anyone can do it, it's the Russos.
