Carrey, Reitman Make Odd Comedy Team

Jason Retiman is a guy whose career seems to be going up and up, and Jim Carrey is, well, not. The Oscar-nominated Juno director and the actor whose most recent movie was the turkey The Number 23 are an odd pair, but they're teaming up for Pierre Pierre, a comedy about, of all things, an art thief. Variety reports that the project was so hot it even sparked a bidding war among studios; Fox Atomic won out in the end.

The comedy will star Carrey as what Variety calls a “French nihilist,” who steals a painting and takes it from Paris to London. Reitman will direct, of course, and the screenplay is by first-timers Edwin Canistracci and Frederick Seton.

Reitman seems like he has the entire world as his feet-- he's got his own production company, an Oscar nomination and all the Hollywood connections he could ask for-- so you know he's choosing his projects carefully. Carrey, even though he's attached to a bunch of upcoming projects, is kind of like the comedian time forgot-- it's been years since he had a major hit. Is Reitman the trick he needs to get back on track? Or will Carrey drag Reitman down with him? Something in me doubts that'll be the case. I'm not sure what the make of the movie itself, but the pairing sounds promising for now.
