DVD Blend - 09/20/05

Each week DVDs come out. Some of them are worth your time and money and some aren't. Some of them are movies I've seen, and some of them aren't. Regardless, I give you my opinion on the big releases of the week. If the releases sound like something you want to buy, just click the link to go to amazon.com and you'll support Cinema Blend with a few pennies. Take it or leave it, here's the DVD Blend.

Mallrats (10th Anniversary Extended Edition)

Last year Miramax gave Kevin Smith fans everywhere a reason to rejoice with Clerks X, a fantastic three-disc tenth anniversary edition of Smith’s debut. This year Universal Studios gives us a tenth anniversary edition of Mallrats on two discs... well, on disc since it’s a flipper. Also, certain bonus features that Smith originally hinted at including won’t be here due to space limitations. Finally, “due to overwhelming demand and limited quantity”, Universal won’t be providing screener copies to everyone who requested them, which I would wager was the same amount Miramax was able to provide. Is it any surprise Smith went back to Miramax for the remainder of his “Askewniverse” flicks?

Battlestar Galactica - Season 1

Did you buy the Best Buy Season One set that’s been available for months now? Well don’t you feel silly. Even though it’s been common knowledge on the web that this set is coming, Best Buy still boasted decent sales of their “UK Edition” of Season One. This is the superior version though, complete with the pilot movie, commentary tracks, and more. Comparing the two is kind of like looking at the old toaster cylons (the Best Buy version) vs. the new, sleek, sexy Number 6 (Tricia Helfer). Hopefully we’ll be getting a look at this set some point in the next week, however this is put out by Universal, so who knows if they’ll pull a Mallrats on us again.

The Outsiders - The Complete Novel

Admittedly, The Outsiders isn’t exactly cinematic brilliance, although it does boast a cast that would spark the careers of most leading men for the next ten years. “The Complete Novel” restores 22 minutes of new footage, including a different beginning and ending, bringing the movie more in touch with S.E. Hinton’s original novel, and another extra ten minutes of still-deleted footage is included in the bonus materials. Director Francis Ford Coppola puts in a commentary track, as do many of the cast’s more prominent members, although thankfully media-nutter Tom Cruise is absent. Maybe Scientology just doesn’t teach people to “stay gold”.

Desperate Housewives - Season 1

Since I gave “Galactica” a more prominent location above, you might guess I’m not exactly down with the ladies from Wisteria Lane. Still, I can’t deny the popularity of the biggest soap opera to hit prime time since “Dallas”, especially since my wife is caught up with it. Thanks to her I’ll be spending just as much time this week with Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman as I will with the cylons. Thankfully there’s also Eva Longoria and that other cast member (whose name I can’t mention without concern of legal action) to help me make it through 24 hours of twists and turns as the ladies uncover each others secrets.

Other titles released this week that might be worth your time:
Row 1 - Cell 0 The Longest Yard - Adam Sandler does Burt Reynolds in this prison football movie. Actually, that sounds sexual, doesn’t it? Lets try this - Adam Sandler plays a former Burt Reynolds role while Burt Reynolds helps him screw someone else over - the audience.Row 1 - Cell 2 Inside Deep Throat - No, this isn’t a documentary about W. Mark Felt since, when the film was being made, we didn’t know he was “Deep Throat”. Wouldn’t that be a cool sequel for the filmmakers of this documentary behind the classic Porno film’s success to do though? They wouldn’t even have to change the title.
Row 2 - Cell 0
Row 3 - Cell 0 From the Earth to the Moon - The Signature Edition - I’m a huge fan of this HBO miniseries, which goes into great detail about the origins of our space program. Given NASA’s recent grounding of the space shuttle program, maybe it’s good for all of us to go back and explore our newly remastered (and now less expensive) roots.Row 3 - Cell 2 Bob Dylan - No Direction Home - Speaking of outer-space... This is the Martin Scorsese documentary on the life and accomplishments of Bob Dylan. Yes the Scorsese who is best known for Mafia movies and Robert DeNiro. No, DeNiro doesn’t play Bob Dylan. No, it’s not Leonardo DiCaprio either. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have anyone with two capital letters in their last name.
Row 4 - Cell 0
Row 5 - Cell 0 Wallace & Gromit in Three Amazing Adventures - I’m a little surprised to see this collection of Wallace & Gromit’s shorter adventures coming out this soon. You’d think the studio would time its release closer to the October 7th debut of their next feature film. Still, any W&G is good W&G.Row 5 - Cell 2 It's All Gone Pete Tong - Actually not about anyone named Pete Tong (the title is slang for things going bad) this biopic tells the story of DJ Frankie Wilde and his battle with hearing loss. Doesn’t sound like the most dramatic story, but it’s gotten some acclaim. I wonder if he ever played Dylan?
Row 6 - Cell 0
