Fashionistas Gets A Director

I’m pretty sure my no-fail ticket to riches and fame is not working for Cinema Blend—sorry guys—but writing my own chick lit novel that name drops fashion in the title and frequently throughout the book. Not that I know anything about fashion or chick lit, per se, but given how much is out there, it couldn’t be too hard. And, as seems to be the case for every other book that comes out with a pink cover, my book would instantly be turned into a movie!

The latest chick lit set to grace (terrorize?) the big screen is Fashionistas, Lynn Messina’s debut novel about—stop me if this sounds familiar—a young woman making her way up in a company despite a terrible boss. OK, she’s a fashion designer in this one, but it sounds like someone is wearing Prada, even if it’s not necessarily the devil. The Hollywood Reporter has announced today that the movie has a director, Donald Petrie, who has made How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Just My Luck and Miss Congeniality in his illustrious career of making women laugh! Cry! And fall in love!

Sorry for the heavy layer of sarcasm, but I’m running out of patience with the identical chick lit books that are making it to the screen. According to the movies, all women who live in New York either work in fashion (this movie, Devil Wears Prada) or are obsessed with it (Confessions of a Shopaholic, coming out Valentine’s Day 2009!), and all of them miraculously have money for fabulous clothes while claiming to be poor. Puh-leeze. Come visit my apartment that’s the size of a camper and take a trip with me to buy $5 shirts at Forever 21, and understand why actual young professionals in New York think this whole genre is complete nonsense.
