First Look At Flags Of Our Fathers

The first trailer for Clint Eastwood's much talked about Iwo Jima movie Flags of our Fathers is out. I hope you speak Japanese.

What's interesting about Clint's film is that he's actually making it twice, from two different perspectives. One, the version that will be release here, tells the story of the conflict from the American point of view. It tells the story of the famous flag raisers in Easy Company, and stars Ryan Philippe, Jesse Bradford, Adam Beach, Paul Walker, Jamie Bell, Barry Pepper, and John Benjamin Hickey.

The second version will be released in Japan, and approaches Iwo Jima from the Japanese perspective. That movie is not called Flags of our Fathers, but rather Red Sun, Black Sand. It focuses on the real-life tales of Japanese General Tadamichi Kuribayashi as played by the great Ken Watanabe.

And if that's not enough to confuse you, the first trailer for either film is a combo trailer. In other words, it's advertising both Flags of our Fathers and Red Sun, Black Sand in a single trailer, with scenes from both perspectives cut together to form a single piece of video. For now, it's only available on WB's Japanese website, and thus in Japanese. But the result is actually quite stunning. Visually it looks a lot like Saving Private Ryan, a comparison which can only be considered a massive compliment. It's kind of like making a gangster movie and being compared to The Godfather.
