Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Will Bring Back The Film's Most Eccentric Character
Aside from the five core characters, it’s difficult to gauge who will be back for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2. James Gunn said that we haven’t seen the last of Nebula (Karen Gillan), but what about Thanos (Josh Brolin), Yondu (Michael Rooker), or even Howard the Duck? As we inch closer to the start of production, it seems as though one major character will be joining the intergalactic band of superhero misfits once again: The Collector.
If Zoe Saldana can be believed, then Benicio Del Toro will return for the Marvel sequel. The actress who plays the deadliest assassin in the galaxy, Gamora, posted a video to Facebook with her husband Marco. If you speak Spanish, then you’ll be able to watch the video no problem. For the rest of us, Saldana is praising Sicario and Del Toro’s performance in the film. She ends the video by exclaiming, "I’ll see you on Guardians."

Now, as Latino Review points out, we have to decide whether or not Saldana actually knows what she’s talking about. No disrespect whatsoever to the actress, but it’s just that none of the actors, including her, said that they’ve read the script for Guardians 2. In fact, most have said that they haven’t and aren’t sure whether or not it’s finished. Gunn, for one, revealed only a couple days ago that he got permission from Marvel to use the name of an alien species in the story, which implies that there’s still work to be done.
However, when the casting of Del Toro was initially revealed, it was revealed the actor — in typical Marvel fashion — had signed on for multiple films. This led some to believe that he would be playing Thanos, the overarching villain of the MCU. Now that we know he’s The Collector, who wants the Infinity Stones for his collection, we should be expecting him in more movies. Since it’s unlikely he’d make his way to Earth any time soon, Guardians 2 is the next likely instance.
In addition to Del Toro and Saldana, Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Dave Bautista (Drax), Vin Diesel (Groot), and Bradley Cooper (Rocket) are returning for the sequel. Not much is known about the plot, though those involved have teased a story focusing on the identity of Star-Lord’s father. In addition, Bautista told Cinema Blend during the press junket for the new James Bond movie Spectre that he believes the plan is to dive deeper into the backstories of the characters, and Gunn said to expect at least one Sneeper alien in the film.
Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 is scheduled for theaters on May 5, 2017.
