Guardians of the Galaxy won’t be in theaters until midnight tomorrow, but incredible positivity leading up to its release has already resulted in an announced sequel. With James Gunn attached to both write and direct, the project was officially slated this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con and is scheduled to come out on July 28, 2017. But what will it be about? The filmmaker at its helm is already dropping hints.
Light Spoiler Warning: This article may include some details about Guardians of the Galaxy that you may not want to know before seeing the film. I will do my best to keep that stuff a bit vague, but this warning is just in case!
With the Guardians of the Galaxy now secured to return in the near future,Film Divider recently took the opportunity to ask James Gunn about what he has planned. Revealing that he has a very clear idea of where he wants to go with a Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Gunn immediately centered in on three characters in particular that he has big plans for. Said the director,
"I have a lot of ideas for stories and characters that are going to appear, and there are documents written up, that some people have, about Peter Quill’s father and his relationship, a lot of stuff about Yondu, and a lot of stuff about Drax that nobody knows."
Even more than just histories of particular characters, Gunn has even mapped out what he wants to do with some of the various cultures at play in Guardians of the Galaxy. His sci-fi adventure film gives us a peek at the conflicted relationship between the Kree (represented largely by Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser) and the Xandarians (represented largely by the members of the Nova Corps), but that’s something he has a lot more ideas for. The same goes for the Ravagers – which is the group that Yondu leads and Star-Lord was once a part of.
Of course, James Gunn isn’t the only one who holds the keys to Guardians of the Galaxy, as the filmmaker has also entrusted his entire game plan to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Revealing this detail as well as another interesting character name for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in the process, Gunn explained,
"I wrote up a lot. [Kevin Feige] knows all the stuff, and if I died tomorrow they could go make a movie. They could write the story of Peter Quill’s father and it would all be there. I think Yondu is a very important character, a really important character in this universe, and I think Nebula is really important too and so I think we’ll see more of both of those characters."
We can all cross our fingers and hope that doesn’t happen, because James Gunn returning for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is easily one of the best things it has going for it.
