While we still have exactly one month before James Gunn' Guardians of the Galaxy arrives in theaters, it's already cleat the music is going to play a very important role in the film. From Star-Lord's ever-present Walkman and orange headphones to the amazing 20th century hits that have played in the trailers, the movie looks like it will be the origins of Marvel Studios' first great mixtape. We still don't know what the track listing for the soundtrack is going to be, but at the very least today we have our first look at the awesome cover.
If this image looks familiar, it's because you can actually see Star-Lord's "Awesome Mix, Vol. 1" in the first Guardians of the Galaxy theatrical trailer (being played with by Groot). While I can't be 100% positive, I'm pretty sure that this is a cassette deck that Star-Lord has built into his ship, The Milano:
So what kind of music can we expect to fill the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack? We can probably expect at least a few more great pop and rock songs that were popular back when Star-Lord was actually on Earth. We have heard a great sampling of tracks so far, including, of course, "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede:
"Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum:
And "Cherry Bomb" by The Runaways.
There's no guarantee that these songs will be included in the connection, but it would be a shame if they weren't just because how well the Guardians of the Galaxy marketing has implemented them.
So how can you order your copy? Amazon has the CD available for pre-order - for $13.48 - and has listed the release date as July 29th - two days before Guardians of the Galaxy's theatrical release. Stay tuned for the skinny on what music will be available on the album.
