How John Wick 2 Connects To The Original Movie, According To Ian McShane

Nobody could have expected that John Wick would become such an insane phenomenon when it hit theaters in the fall of 2014. The straightforward, yet brutally executed, revenge thriller crafted one of the most uniquely engaging cinematic worlds in recent memory. John Wick will soon return in the aptly titled John Wick: Chapter Two, but up until recently we’ve known very little about how the film will continue the titular assassin’s story. Now it seems that the events of the first movie will directly inform the action of the upcoming sequel.

During a recent interview with EW, actor Ian McShane, who plays the Continental Hotel's owner Winston, explained that John Wick: Chapter Two would directly build off of the events from the original film:

Keanu gets a new dog. But yes, it’s about what comes on him after that. It’s all about the assassin’s code, if you like. He’s killed a Russian gangster and now there’s a contract out on him, so it’s a continuation. I loved the first one. This could be even better than the first.

So it seems that John Wick didn’t get away as cleanly as we though after the events of the first film. John Wick ended with the titular badass getting revenge against the Russian mobsters who killed his adorable puppy, Daisy, but it seems that his decision to re-enter the criminal underworld will have unforeseen consequences. Let's just hope that they don't kill this new dog, because that would seriously be too much to handle.

The original John Wick did an amazing job of constructing a fully-realized world for all of the assassins and criminals to live in. If there’s one thing that consistently seemed to come up, it’s the notion that this fantastic world is most certainly governed by rules. John Wick broke these rules when he checked into the Continental Hotel in order to make things personal, and this decision will see numerous assassins coming after him.

Our biggest hope for John Wick: Chapter Two is that, despite the fact that he will have a contract on his head, the hero will still have allies who help him out along the way. As previously mentioned, John Wick meticulously constructed a world and an economy for these assassins and criminals, and one of the most fun elements of the entire movie was watching all of these low-life thugs operate with an oddly formal sense of decorum.

Just check out this scene from John Wick to see this set of rules in action:

We will keep you up to date with any and all details related to John Wick: Chapter Two as they become available to us. The sequel will hit theaters on February 10 of next year.
