When you consider the fact that the movie came out just shortly after the Newtown, Connecticut shootings and opens with a sniper gunning down eight people in cold blood, it's not a big surprise that Jack Reacher under performed when it hit theaters in the U.S. back in December. Despite rather positive reviews, the film only managed to make $15 million in its opening weekend, taking second place behind The Hobbit, which was in theaters for its second week. By the end of its run the movie only managed to make $79 million domesically, which isn't great when you consider the $60 million production budget.
But overseas Jack Reacher has somehow been the little engine that could. In international markets the movie has actually managed to make nearly $125 million, pushing its total over $200 million and making it the ninth Tom Cruise film to do so, But you know what else the numbers mean? That we might be getting a sequel.
According to Deadline, now that the franchise has been shown to have appeal in international markets there are on-going discussions about a possible follow-up. It sounds as though things are still at a very early stage, but this is a very different tune than what was being sung back in mid-January when it sounded as though the chances of a part two were less than zero. Presumably Cruise would be back to star, but who knows if he would have the behind-the-camera team from the first return as well.
If they do hit go on a sequel, which Lee Child book do you think they should adapt next?
