Universal is turning the hit Broadway musical “Mamma Mia!” into a movie, and they’ve hired Meryl Streep to star in it according to Variety.

Mamma Mia! is the musical you’ve probably heard about that’s based on the music of Abba. Even if you’re not a fan of Dancing Queen, it’s supposed to be a great time. But will it translate into a decent film? So few musicals do. Universal has hired the stage version’s director Phyillida Lloyd to make her feature film directorial debut on the project, and Catherine Johnson who wrote both the book and the play is also adapting it into a film script. It seems they think sticking closely to the source material is the way to go.

Meryl Streep will play the rebellious single mother of a bride-to-be named Sophie. Sophie has never met her father, but wants him there to give her away at her wedding. Sophie and her mom must figure out which of three possible men her Dad is. The musical incorporates music from the Swedish group Abba into the production and turns them into dance numbers. The production uses Abba hits like Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, and Thank You For the Music.
