A Second Elizabeth The First

Hollywood's obsession with sequels continues unabated as Variety reports that a sequel to the 1998 movie Elizabeth is on its way. I won't complain too much since we haven't had a good period drama in a while. Still, this smacks lightly of a good idea being recycled and I'm a little bit wary.

The movie will apparently focus on the famous queen's relationship with another famous figure, Sir Walter Raleigh, a role that will be played by Clive Owen. Geoffrey Rush, who played Sir Francis Walshingham in the first film, will return again as will Cate Blanchett in her role Elizabeth I. That brings up an interesting question: the title. Elizabeth II wouldn't work very well now would it.

Shekhar Kapur is slated to return as director and filming is set to start this April. At least we can expect something less sensationalistic than The New World.
