In case you thought Star Wars was the only film franchise coming back that you never thought you’d ever see again, there’s also this little deal going on with the Harry Potter world, specifically the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. While we have something of an idea of what this movie will look like, because we’ve seen a Harry Potter film, we’re now getting our first real look at how Eddie Redmayne will appear in the film.

I’m not sure how much he looks like a magizoologist, but having never actually met one before I suppose this will do. Entertainment Weekly has this first image, which comes on the heels of the official reveal of the film’s logo. The story will take place, or at least begin, in the 1920’s in New York City, so if anything his outfit looks to be fairly subtle for the time period. It’s a nice coat but other than that, and you know, the magic wand, he could really be anybody. What’s interesting is the set in which he is standing. His feet are on top of a seal, which reads Congress of the United States. This could be a bit misleading as the first word is actually missing: Magical. The Magical Congress is the American version of Harry Potter’s Ministry of Magic, and apparently it’s a fairly ornate place. It fits with the time period. The 1920s were a booming time in history, and there’s no reason to believe that witches and wizards were immune to a little opulence.

Eddie Redmayne is dressed as Newt Scamander. He is the author of the book Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, and the film will tell the story of his adventures in writing the reference tome that appears in the Harry Potter stories and was published by J.K. Rowling herself in 2001.

The fact that the story will be taking place in the United States may actually be the single biggest shift for the film outside of not having a kid with a lightning scar in the cast. The entire focus of the wizarding world to this point has been focused on England, and while the books gave us occasional glimpses of other European countries, we really have no idea what the US will look like. Since the book that the film is based on is not a proper story but more of a reference book, we have little to go on about what the actual story in the film will be.

Still, it’s a guy with a magic wand in a story written by J.K. Rowling, and there’s really nothing wrong with that. Hopefully, once this first story gets published we’ll start to hear more about the film itself, as we’re more than a year away from its release.
