SpongeBob SquarePants Announces New Movie With Cheeky Poster

He lives in a pineapple under the sea--and he's returning to theaters early 2015! It's been ten years since SpongeBob SquarePants made his big screen debut with the aptly titled SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. But you can get a look at his new movie makeover in the promotional poster Paramount Pictures dropped today.

Empire tipped us to this particular poster, which has the kooky 2D cartoon character fleshed out for a CG 3D adventure called The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water 3D. This flashy sequel is being helmed by Paul Tibbit, who directed a string of episodes of the television cartoon show. Its script was fittingly penned by the show's creator Stephen Hillenburg.

Dare to compare SpongeBob from his popular Nickelodeon cartoon show, SpongeBob SquarePants to his The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water 3D version:

SpongeBob comparison

This new SpongeBob is not only a textured, 3D computer-generated cartoon, but also considerably cuter than his typical incarnation. Though the tagline at the poster's top promises, "He's Leaving His World Behind" (get it, behind?), The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water 3D will boast appearances from Bikini Bottom residents like Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke), Squidward (Rodger Bumpass), Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown), Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence), and Plankton (Mr. Lawrence). Of course, Tom Kenny will be shouldering the biggest role, voicing both SpongeBob and his pet snail Gary.

From here, I'll be interested to see how The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water 3D will look. Is everyone in Bikini Bottom getting a swanky CGI 3D makeover? Or is this look solely for sections of the movie that might take place outside of the ocean? Popping out of the water was a running gag on the beloved cartoon series, and notably SpongeBob had a different look for when that did occur. Basically, he'd look like this:

For now, we don't have a plot synopsis for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water 3D, just this poster and some news on the cast. Aside from a big, welcomed reunion of SpongeBob SquarePants regulars, Antonio Banderas is on board playing Alameda Jack, who is rumored to be a pirate. Will he be lending his voice as he did in the Shrek movies? Or will he get a surreal but sensational live-action role like David Hasslehoff managed in the 2004 SpongeBob SquarePants Movie? I'm hoping for the latter, because look at this nonsense! It's glorious.

That was a real thing. In a movie for children.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water 3D will open in February 2015.
