In the past couple months we've gotten word that Captain America will indeed have his own solo movie sequel, with both Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, the writers of The First Avenger, hired to write the script. The question mark that has remained is the future of Thor. Despite growing buzz and the mainstream audiences affinity for superhero stories, the film is no guaranteed success at the box office. Still, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige seems quite confident.
Feige recently did an interview with D23 (via IGN) and confirmed that sequels for both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger are in the works. While little was said about what adventures the God of Thunder would get into post-Avengers, he did confirm that the next Cap movie will be a movie set in the present. Last week, McFeely and Markus were quoted saying that the timeline would depend on audiences' reaction to the first film, and would either be set during World War II or in modern times. the studio president also said that they are still trying to work out solo movies for characters that have only appeared in other projects thus far, including Black Widow, Hawkeye, and S.H.I.E.L.D.
I'm truly wary about all of this future planning. While it works for the short term - as The Avengers is a go no matter what - this is a prime example of counting your chickens before they hatch. If everything works out fine and Thor is a massive hit, then the world keeps spinning and everything's fine, but if it's a disaster it could present a bit of a PR problem.
