UPDATED: The Rock Goes 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
Disney has been working on a remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for awhile now. They’ve gone through several different iterations of the same script, and McG is on board to direct. Now it looks like they may have found their star.
The latest issue of Production Weekly lists Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as being attached to the film. Johnson has already forged a successful relationship with Disney, making the transition from future action star to modern-day Steve Guttenberg by doing widely panned Disney movies. His most recent remake under the Disney banner was Race to Witch Mountain. Well here’s another one.
No word on what role Johnson might play in the film, though it’s hard to imagine him as a bearded Captain Nemo. He would however be a perfect fit for the part of a burly sailor named ned, Ned, captured and brought on board the Nautilus along with a scientist and an obligatory female love interest. Here’s how PW breaks down the plot: “The story begins with the mystery of an underwater “beast” that has been stalking boats, taking bites out of them, and leaving them to sink to the bottom of the sea. Ned, is reluctantly recruited by an old army buddy to hunt the beast. He’s joined by Aronnax, a scientist and Julie. They go out looking for this beast and eventually find it. But the beast is not a beast at all…it’s a super tricked out mega submarine called “The Nautilus,” captained by Nemo, who takes them captive and brings them back to a secret Volcano City. There they learn that Nemo is searching for a lost underwater civilization that holds libraries of vast knowledge and a weapon with the power to destroy mankind.”
UPDATE! McG, the film's director tells Sci-Fi that there are no truths to the rumors that The Rock is in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
