With the deranged crime comedy Seven Psychopaths, In Bruges writer-director Martin McDonagh is flipping the script and delivering something stranger than any of the film's trailers so far let on. Rather than giving away the feature's peculiar plot twists, the marketing has focused on the seriously strange brand of comedy that is McDonagh's forte: rapid-fire banter, laced with four-letter words and deeply dark humor. Basically, he tells the kind of jokes that make you laugh hard…and then feel sort of guilty for it. It's pretty fucking fantastic.
We've already seen hints of the film's wild side with its green band and red band trailers, as well as a PSA from Woody Harrelson's pet-loving but bloodthirsty gangster Charlie Costello. Now, we've got the feature's most bizarre promo to date: the trailer recreated with cats in wigs. Prepare to be stunned by the cussing and killing Seven PsychoCATS:
Seven PsychoCATS was directed by Jim Tozzi, who designed animated characters as well as puppets for MTV's Wonder Showzen, and later served as executive producer on the Adult Swim series Xavier: Renegade Angel and Delocated. You got to hand it to Tozzi, he does some incredible yet mind-blowingly weird things with his kitty cast. But serious props for casting the hairless cat as Walken. I can't put my finger on why it works, but damn does it ever!
And if you can't get enough of Seven PsychoCATS, here's a string of GIFs for you to enjoy.
Seven Psychopaths hits theaters on October 12th. Check out more about it in our Blend Film Database.
