Despite being announced as one of the potential additions to the DC Extended Universe several years ago, Justice League Dark (known for a time as Dark Universe) has had a tough time getting off the ground. Its most recent setback was when Guillermo del Toro exited as director following too many delays. Fortunately, it looks like Justice League Dark has finally gotten back on track, as news just broke that Edge of Tomorrow's Doug Liman will helm the movie.

Variety is reporting that Liman has been hired as Justice League Dark's new director, with the movie said to "play a major role in the new D.C. Cinematic Universe." While plot details weren't revealed, the film's lineup will reportedly be compose of "Det." John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon. Guillermo del Toro is still producing Justice League Dark (with Scott Rudin), wile Michael Gilio is listed as the screenwriter. This will mark the big screen debuts of Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan, while Constantine and Swamp Thing have previously led their own live action movies and TV shows.

Justice League Dark

Doug Liman is no stranger to directing action in movies, including 2001's The Bourne Identity, but this will have his first time tackling a superhero movie. However, it isn't the first superhero movie he's been connected to. He was previously signed on to direct the X-Men spinoff Gambit for 20th Century Fox, but because of this Justice League Dark development, someone else will have to helm the Ragin' Cajun's solo adventure. Magic was introduced to the DCEU in Suicide Squad earlier this month, but of all the DC movies that have been announced so far, Justice League Dark will pull back to curtain on the world of mysticism the most. After all, this is the team that deals with the supernatural threats the Justice League can't handle on their own. Anyone who's read a Justice League Dark comic book know that the cinematic adaptation will be spooky, but with Liman leading the charge, fans are guaranteed to see unique, action-packed insanity.

Although most of the Justice League Dark's characters have been part of the DC Comics universe for years, the team was officially formed at the start of the New 52 in 2011. The movie hasn't added any actors yet, but it was rumored that Colin Farrell is being eyed to play John Constantine, Ron Perlman for Swamp Thing and Ewan McGregor for an unidentified role. Anton Arcane was rumored at one time to be the main antagonist. DC is also making a Justice League Dark animated movie for release next year, so this team magical heroes is about to become a lot more well known among general audiences.

There's still no word on when Justice League Dark will hit theaters, but we'll keep you updated as more news comes in. In the meantime, make sure to let us know what you think of Doug Liman helming the supernatural adventure in the comments below.
