Could Thor’s Roommate Be Back For Ragnarok? Here’s What The Director Said

When Captain America: Civil War hit theaters in May, fans were thrilled to see almost every superhero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe duke it out in an epic airport battle. And while it was truly an ensemble piece that came organically as a result of eight years and 12 other movies, there were some MCU heavyweights who were noticeably absent from the fray: Hulk and Thor. In fact, the two were barely even referenced in Civil War, leading many to wonder where the hell Thor was while his buddies kicked each other's asses. This was answered by a hilarious short, which showed Thor and his new human roommate Darryl having their own boring adventures. And because Thor's roommate and the short were so funny, many people have been wondering if Darryl could possibly make an appearance in Thor: Ragnarok.

Thor: Ragnarok's director Taika Waititi recently sat down for an interview with the good folks at IGN, where he was eventually asked about Darryl's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and specifically the threequel.

I think you probably could see him again. There may be other little pieces of that thing that everyone saw that may just be a small part of a bigger thing.

How delightfully vague of you, Mr. Waititi. Let's brainstorm how Darryl could possibly make a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

To start, he could have a cameo in Thor: Ragnarok. Surely he wouldn't be a major role, but it's entirely possible that Taika Waititi put the easter egg of Darryl's appearance just for the fans. Marvel movies are already used to sticking Stan Lee randomly onto the silver screen, so why not Darryl?

There's also another aspect of Taika Waititi's statement that might hint at Darryl's return. Namely, that the hilarious short which debuted at San Diego Comic-Con might not be the whole story. My guess is that they shot way more material and funny bits between Thor and Darryl, and therefore have a bunch of "new" footage that fans haven't been privy to. So perhaps they will give us more of this unlikely duo through the special features or a mid-credit scene in Thor: Ragnarok. This would make sure the film's narrative wasn't forced to include an inside joke, and it wouldn't affect the main events of Ragnarok as a whole.

As a reminder, check out the short in question and have yourself a nice laugh.

Of course, time will only tell if and how Darryl is reintroduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor: Ragnarok won't be in theaters for over a year so we'll just have to bide our time, wait, and see Doctor Strange in order to re enter the MCU.

Thor: Ragnarok will fly into theaters on November 3rd, 2016.
