Fast And Furious 8 Has The Wildest Title Yet

The Fast and the Furious franchise has always featured strange sequel titles. It's basically a part of the legacy at this point. It all began with 2 Fast 2 Furious, but we've seen much odder alterations since - from the only movie with a subtitle (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) to the cut down fifth and seventh chapters (Fast Five and Furious 7). Now the name of the eighth movie in the franchise has been revealed and it's really the strangest one yet: The Fate of the Furious.

As you can see, this title was made official on the movie's Facebook page, complete with title treatment. It's super strange, and definitely fits in with the series of titles, but I do have one complaint: why the hell isn't it called The F8 of the Furious? Seems like a missed opportunity. It's not as bad as Bad Boys 3 being called Bad Boys For Life (why not save that for the fourth movie?!), but it's treading in the same water.

Once again scripted by Chris Morgan - who has written every Fast and Furious movie since Tokyo Drift - and directed by F. Gary Gray, the new sequel has been shrouded in mystery up until today, but that veil has started to lift. In addition to getting the new Fast 8 title and a rapid-fire trailer teaser, we also now have the official synopsis! You can check it out below:

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game---and the rest of the crew has been exonerated---the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar(r) winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can't seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before. From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world's stage...and to bring home the man who made them a family.

In addition to weird sequel titles, it seems that globetrotting is now a big part of the Fast and Furious franchise as well. (Remember when it was an updated version of Point Break about street racing in Los Angeles?). While Furious 7 brought Dom and the rest of the gang back home, it looks like their next big adventure is once again have them spread out around the globe. We're just excited for all of the ridiculous set piece opportunities that these locations present.

The Fate Of The Furious brings back Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell after their exploits in Furious 7, and it won't be long until we get our first extended look at the 2017 blockbuster. The first trailer for the seventh sequel in the franchise is set to debut on Sunday, December 11th during a special live event on the film's official Facebook page. You can be sure that we'll have the footage for you here on Cinema Blend as soon as it goes live, so be sure to tune in!

The Fate of the Furious will be in theaters April 14, 2017.
