The Golden Globes are tonight, in which dozens of films and television shows will be honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for just being generally great. While these awards are typically a celebration of film, on the total opposite side of the spectrum are the Razzies, which are "awards" given to the worst films of the year. A mean internet comment in the form of an award show, every year the Razzies pick the worst of the worst; this year the divisive Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has the most pre-nominations of all the films released in 2016.
This list of Razzie 2016 nominations comes from Heroic Hollywood, wherein Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has eight total nominations. These nominations include the categories for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff or Sequel, and Worst Actor for both Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, to name a few. Alternatively, Warner Bros' other big superhero film, Suicide Squad, only has four nominations.
It's important to note that this is not the final list, which will be officially revealed on January 23. Therefore, there's a chance that some of these nominations are subject to change before we grab our pitchforks.
It's true that Batman v Superman is a very divisive movie, but does it deserve even half of these nominations? I'd say it doesn't. It's an okay movie that didn't live up to its massive potential. For example, Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill probably don't deserve Worst Actor; Affleck is the best actor in that movie, and Cavill is simply underutilized. Batman v Superman's big sin is in editing that completely chokes the film, which is not a category. There were certainly worse movies released this year, like Gods of Egypt, that are more deserving of these Razzies -- if you put any stock into Razzies, that is.
Other films on the list include genuine stinkers like Dirty Grandpa, Gods of Egypt, and Collateral Beauty. I'm not a proponent for the Razzies in any way, which are too mean-spirited for my liking, but these are some films that are at least worse than Batman v Superman. If there's any consolation to give to BvS fans, it's that after this, criticism of BvS will relax and it'll eventually die out completely. Let's just hope Wonder Woman and Justice League don't go through all of this too.
