More than once, Anna Faris and Chris Pratt have been called the new "Goldie and Kurt." It's a reference to the time-tested romance of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, and the analogy was deepened when Russell was hired to play Pratt's father, Ego the Living Planet, in this summer's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The comparison between the two Hollywood couples took yet another interesting turn when it was reported that Faris would frontline a remake of Overboard, the 1987 comedy that starred Hawn and Russell in a quirky romantic comedy. We recently had a chance to interview Faris for The Emoji Movie, but as she was just wrapping Overboard, we asked if she and Pratt would ever do a rom-com together:
Oh, thanks for saying that! ... The original [Overboard] is my most favorite movie. I saw it at that impressionable time of life when you're 9 years old, and you love every movie! But that one in particular, it's my rainy day movie. But we would love to do a romantic comedy together. And we're working on a couple of things, so hopefully we will.
It makes too much sense. Chris Pratt and Anna Faris routinely come across as the celebrity couple you'd most want to hang out with, shooting the breeze or drinking some cocktails. They go out of their way to entertain on social media, on red carpets, and in their respective movies. Why wouldn't someone cast them as leads in a movie together? They've gotten together a bit for smaller things like Take Me Home Tonight and Movie 43, but no one was going to see any of those movies to watch their chemistry. So it's great to hear that they're not only thinking about doing a rom-com together, they're actively working on a few projects that could result in a fun effort.
It won't be Overboard, though, which opens in theaters in 2018. That remake is taking a different approach, reversing the original story's roles to turn Anna Faris into the working-class character who meets and falls in love with a rich man who -- naturally -- falls off of a boat and loses his memory. The role that once was played by Kurt Russell will this time be played by Mexican film star/screenwriter/comedian Eugenio Derbez, who brings an enormous Latin American fan base to the project and will give the movie a huge boost. Here's what Overboard looked like back in '87:
On July 28, Anna Faris lends her voice to the animated character of Jailbreak in the upcoming comedy The Emoji Movie. Next year, we'll see her holding down the Overboard remake, while her husband gets ready to battle dinosaurs in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2018. After that? Get these two in a rom-com. Stat!
