It's not uncommon to see sequels make more during opening weekend than the first movie in a given series, and if estimates for the upcoming Thor movie hold true, we could be seeing that trend again this November. Following two previous Thor outings, it is anticipated that Thor: Ragnarok will bring in somewhere between $90 million and $100 million in the United States during its opening weekend. And that's not going anywhere near the money the Marvel film will bring in Internationally.
Even if the flick falls shy of $100 million, the money the Marvel film brings in will be good for the Disney-owned company, but also the theaters that need major attendance to rake in money. There have been several fairly slow weeks at the movies in recent months, and the last more than $100 million winner was IT, which roared into theaters with $124 million during its first weekend. In comparison, $100 million would be a little lower for Thor: Ragnarok, but still higher than Thor and Thor: The Dark World, which brought in $65 million and $85 million respectfully.
THR notes that a lot of the buzz around Thor: Ragnarok has come because of its trailer, which has been played more times than Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Beauty and the Beast. Both Disney films broke the $100 million barrier during their first weeks at the domestic box office. The Thor: Ragnarok trailer has been played more than $136 million times. Of course, Marvel films have pretty big budgets, and while we don't know exactly how much Thor: Ragnarok cost after production, marketing and advertising, it will need to do well both domestically and internationally in order to make money. If the first numbers are any indication, its track record in the United States should be good, even if it is opening in November--a month that is traditionally pretty stacked in terms of popular movies.
This November, you'll be able to see Justice League, A Bad Moms Christmas, Daddy's Home 2, Coco and Murder on the Orient Express, among others.
