Why Poe Dameron Wears That Necklace In Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron had a much larger and more important role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi compared to The Force Awakens. We got to know the character much better, which means many might have noticed an interesting piece of jewelry he wears. Throughout The Last Jedi Poe was sporting a necklace which carried a ring. It turns out that ring has a backstory to it. Though it's never mentioned in the film, a new Star Wars book reveals that the ring actually belonged to Poe's mother, and he keeps it waiting for the day that he'll find somebody to give it to. According to the book...
So now you know. This detail is revealed by Star Wars: The Last Jedi - The Visual Dictionary (via comicbook.com) which is a new compendium of information about the new film, including, as is the case here, details that the movie itself never really gets into. The book was written by Pablo Hidalgo, a member of the Star Wars story team at Lucasfilm.
The ring is a nice little touch, considering the fact that it's never referenced, and yet it has a bit of a story to it. While not every wardrobe detail might have this level of consideration, it shows that the Lucasfilm team is considering everything when it comes to putting together what we see on the screen.
We actually know more than a little about Poe Dameron's mother from the ancillary material that Star Wars has created in recent years. The Star Wars: Shattered Empire comic series follows Shara Bey in the events between The Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Bey was actually a Rebel fighter pilot who was involved in the attack on the second Death Star. Poe followed in her footsteps, and the fact that he also carries her ring with him shows that she was a major influence on him as a person.
Of course, while the movie did not explicitly call out the ring's history, the fact that it is there and has an intended purpose will, of course, cause us to wonder if Poe might find that special someone in the new movies. Poe has not expressly shown interest in anybody up through Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and those people who have been waiting to see Poe and Finn get together will have to deal with the fact that Rose now appears to be in the picture.
Add this to the list of questions that we have coming out of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Maybe the ring will become important during Star Wars: Episode IX.
