How Edgar Wright Accidentally Cameoed In Baby Driver

While a film director's duties take place off-camera, some of them choose to insert themselves into the movie. Sometimes this means doubling as the lead actor, such as Ben Affleck in Argo, and other times it means simply dropping in for a cameo, like Alfred Hitchcock in nearly all his movies. Edgar Wright fell into the latter category for last year's Baby Driver, but it wasn't done purposefully. While Wright was shooting one of Ansel Elgort's scenes, he accidentally was reflected in a window, as you'll see in the gif below.

In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, Edgar Wright can quickly be seen as the shadowy figure being reflected on the music store window in front of Ansel Elgort right before the actor mimes playing the saxophone. This scenes takes place early into Baby Driver, when Elgort's Baby is going to pick up coffee for his fellow criminals. Wright and his team could have easily digitally removed the unintentional appearance, but instead, they opted to simply turn the monitor he'd been holding into an iPhone and have him remain in the movie. This was a fun reveal that Wright dropped on his Twitter page, though I suspect that even if that had remained a monitor in the reflection, most viewers wouldn't have picked up on anything out of the ordinary happening across the street from Elgort.

This isn't the first time Edgar Wright has cameoed in one of his movies, though those other times were intentional. He briefly appeared in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and had a vocal cameo in The World's End. Baby Driver also wasn't the only movie from last year where Wright cameoed, as he appeared in Star Wars: The Last Jedi as a soldier for The Resistance.

Baby Driver marked Edgar Wright's fist directorial endeavor since 2013's The World's End. After his time on Ant-Man ended, Wright finally brought to life his musically-infused tale about a getaway driver afflicted with tinnitus who finds love and tries to leave his life of crime behind. Baby Driver, which, along with Elgort, starred Lily James, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Eliza Gonzalez and Kevin Spacey, was met with critical acclaim and was incredibly successful commercially, making over $226 million worldwide off a $34 million budget. Wright is planning on writing Baby Driver 2, though it remains to be seen if a sequel will actually be greenlit.

Edgar Wright's next movie hasn't been announced yet, but stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more news about the director's career. In the meantime, you can plan your trips to the movie theater later this year by checking out our 2018 release schedule.
