Captain Marvel In Avengers: Infinity War? Here's What We Know

Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel in comics

Ever since Marvel announced Captain Marvel as part of its Phase 3 film slate, fans have been waiting to see Carol Danvers make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. The heroine's origin story will finally unfold this time next year, but with Captain Marvel (as well as Ant-Man and the Wasp) coming out in the period between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, there's been questions about if Brie Larson's Carol might pop in one or both of those movies. Well, after months of rumors and indirect mentions, it's been officially confirmed that Carol will appear in Avengers 4, but she will not show up in Infinity War. To provide some context, here's what director Joe Russo said last year to CinemaBlend and other outlets last year at the Infinity War set visit in Atlanta, Georgia about Captain Marvel's involvement:

If it's not, it is official now. I think Captain Marvel's got a great outfit in this film.

At first, that quote makes it sound like Captain Marvel will indeed appear in Avengers: Infinity War, adding yet another hero the movie's large ranks. However, Infinity War and Avengers 4 were shooting back-to-back last year, ComicBook.com has clarified with Marvel Studios that Joe Russo's comment was more in line with the plans for the character as a whole, and that she won't participate Infinity War. So for those of you who were wondering if Carol Danvers might fly into next month's Avengers movie towards the end or in one of the mid/post-credits scenes, put those ideas to rest. The first time we'll see her is when her origin story unfolds in the Captain Marvel movie, and then she'll return a few months later for Avengers 4 and meet the MCU's other great heroes.

While it's good to finally have official confirmation about Carol Danvers' first MCU appearances, there's still the question of just how she is drawn into the events of Avengers 4. The Captain Marvel movie takes place in the 1990s, so where has Carol been all this time? Given that Captain Marvel will see Carol battling the Skrulls, I suspect that the end of her movie will see her departing Earth and traveling to another corner of the galaxy. As for why she hasn't aged after all this time, perhaps that's connected to her Kree powers. Regardless, while Avengers: Infinity War will be a major turning point in the MCU, we'll have to wait a little longer to see Carol become a major player in this franchise.

Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019, and Avengers 4 will follow on May 3 of the same year. And even though Carol Danvers isn't appearing in Avengers: Infinity War, you can see nearly every other Marvel hero come together to battle Thanos and his minions when that movie arrives on April 27.
