Hereditary Has Hit A Box Office Milestone For A24

Hereditary

Ari Aster's Hereditary hit theaters like a car crashing into a light post earlier this summer and many horror fans have hailed it as a triumph. It turns out that the success isn't just in the inner circle of horror buffs either, as Hereditary has made some serious cash along the way. In fact, with the numbers rolling in, we now can confirm that Hereditary is the highest-grossing A24 production to date.

According to a report from Deadline, Hereditary has made a nice sum of money in its theatrical run. In total, the film has garnered $78 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing movie in the A24 library. Obviously, $78 million isn't massive by the standard of something like Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, or even something like Solo: A Star Wars Story (which wasn't considered a hit by any measure), but that's pretty impressive for a deeply-disturbing, slow burn, hard-R horror romp with a relatively low budget.

Word of mouth likely played a big role in Hereditary's road to financial success. The film was a hit with audiences on the festival circuit before its wide release, with many drawing comparisons to The Exorcist and The Sixth Sense in their assessments of its story. Horror is a genre that can easily foster a cult movement for a given movie, and Hereditary was able to do that AND go on to make some awesome money.

Of course, despite Hereditary's massive box office success for A24, the film did not debut without its own fair share of controversy and criticism. Despite great reviews from the critical community and a great box office haul, it also received an abysmal D+ CinemaScore rating, showing a clear divide between mainstream audiences on how to handle the movie's story. Still, even in the face of a bad CinemaScore, Hereditary's financial performance still qualifies it as a clear success for A24.

Now it's a matter of wondering how A24 will proceed going forward. The indie movie production house has shown increasing power in its ability to draw in talented actors for its films in recent years, but the overall scope of A24 productions has not really increased in any significant way. With the financial success of a movie of Hereditary backing it, we're left to ponder if this will lead to bigger movies that tell stories on a much larger scale.
