What’s Going On With Hobbs And Shaw 2? Here’s The Latest From The Producer

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in Hobbs & Shaw

Following four appearances in the main Fast & Furious film series, Dwayne Johnson carved out his own corner of the car-centric franchise with Jason Statham with 2019’s Hobbs & Shaw. The following year, it was confirmed that a sequel is in development, although it sounds like it’ll be a while until it arrives. Now producer Hiram Garcia has provided an update on where exactly Hobbs & Shaw 2 is in the creative process.

While speaking with Collider about the recently-released Jungle Cruise and upcoming projects he and Dwayne Johnson have in development at their production company, Seven Bucks Productions, Hiram Garcia said the following about what’s happening with Hobbs & Shaw 2

At the moment we’re trying to figure out what that sequel is going to be, but we have some very big ideas.

In November 2019, Hiram Garcia revealed that there were plans in motion to develop Hobbs & Shaw 2, and by March 2020, he confirmed that the sequel was on the way, with Chris Morgan, who co-wrote Hobbs & Shaw with Drew Pearce, being brought back to pen the screenplay. Few updates have come in about Hobbs & Shaw 2 since then, and considering that Dwayne Johnson, Garcia and the rest of the creative minds involved are still hashing out the story, it makes sense why things have been quiet lately.

One thing that has recently become clear is that Dwayne Johnson’s continued participation in the Fast & Furious franchise will only happen through more Hobbs & Shaw movies. Despite F9 director Justin Lin expressing interest in Luke Hobbs returning for Fast & Furious 10 and 11 (or Fast & Furious 10: Part 1 and Part 2, if you prefer), Johnson said last month that he will not return to the main Fast & Furious film series. Hiram Garcia shed light on this decision with these words:

After filming Fast 8 DJ made the clear decision to close the Fast & Furious chapter for all the evident reasons. He wished them all well and shifted our focus on to other story telling avenues. So while he will not be in F10 or F11, that won’t in any way interfere with our Hobbs plans. Obviously all these characters exist in the Fast universe and we love to see all aspects of that universe thrive and succeed. We just have specific plans for what we want to do with the Hobbs character and I think the fans are going to love it! We’re working to deliver something very unique and fresh and we know the studio is eager for us to get into it ASAP!

So Dwayne Johnson has known for years now that 2017’s The Fate of the Furious would be his last outing within the primary Fast saga. That’s not to say he couldn’t cross paths with his allies from Dominic Toretto’s gang again, but if that happens, it’ll be in a Hobbs & Shaw movie. In any case, with Hobbs & Shaw establishing the threat of the mysterious director of the Eteon organization, as well as introducing Ryan Reynolds’ Victor Locke, Kevin Hart’s Air Marshal Dinkley and Rob Delaney as CIA agent Loeb as potential allies for Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw to turn to in the future, there’s no shortage of narrative paths Hobbs & Shaw 2 can embark down.

Once concrete details about Hobbs & Shaw 2 are announced, we here at CinemaBlend will let you know about them. For now, you can currently see Dwayne Johnson performing opposite Emily Blunt in Jungle Cruise, and he next be seen in Netflix’s Red Notice come November, followed by Black Adam in summer 2022.
