Ever since The Fighter slugged its way through the most recent Oscar season, scoring two wins from seven nominations that included Best Picture, Mark Wahlberg and director David O. Russell have circled several follow-up projects. Time to toss another log on the fires of speculation.
Wahlberg and Russell, who previously collaborated on such films as Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees, are planning an adaptation of Matthew Quick’s novel The Silver Lining Playbook. Vulture, which broke the story, says the book centers around “a delusional former high school history teacher who's just been released into the custody of his mom” who goes on an emotional quest to win back his ex-wife.
So ixnay on that rumored Fighter sequel and pump the brakes regarding an Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune video game adaptation. Vulture says that with Wahlberg in consideration for Playbook, that picture likely will be Russell’s next.
These two have been working together for years, and their collaborations have been engaging, challenging, and somewhat provocative. Playbook sounds more in line with material that would appeal to Russell over a video game adaptation or a sequel, so this is promising news. Now let’s see if they actually go in this direction, or if we’re reporting on yet another rumored production sometime next week.
