Everybody makes such a big deal about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and how he has managed to work his way into a steady stream of muscle-bound pictures, from G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Pain & Gain to the upcoming Fast & Furious 6. But his Fast cohort Vin Diesel has a couple of geek-worthy projects in his pocket, including Riddick, which is catching attention with a full-length trailer shared via Machinima’s YouTube page.
The tease establishes a story we already knew: The left-for-dead antihero Diesel has played in two previous films finds himself on the run from a team of highly trained bounty hunters on a forgotten sun … only, there’s a much bigger problem that all of the fighters are going to have to face if they want to live to see another adventure.
I’ll say this about Riddick: The effects in this trailer look fantastic. The sun planet, as a location, is barren without being desolate and depressing. The stunts have an epic scale. And the threatening creatures that surface in the second half of the clip – the ones that are going to cause the real headaches for Riddick – look positively unbeatable.
Even if Riddick ends up being Aliens with Diesel in Sigourney Weaver’s role, I think that could make for an entertaining night at the movies … and a big step up from the bloated The Chronicles of Riddick. David Twohy once again directs this chapter in the Riddick saga. The film co-stars Karl Urban, Jordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, and Nolan Gerard Funk. It will be in theaters on Sept. 6.
