Chaz Bono And Josh Hutcherson Honored At GLAAD Media Awards

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation held its annual awards ceremony last night, and not surprisingly, Chaz Bono had himself quite an evening. The transgender former contestant on Dancing With The Stars took home one honor for his documentary Becoming Chaz and a second for actively promoting equality in the public eye. The latter prize was doled out by Chaz’s mother Cher herself, who surprised on stage with big smiles and an even bigger wig.

In addition to Bono, Modern Family was also honored, as were Hot In Cleveland, Drop Dead Diva and the Academy Award-winning Beginners, all for doing their part to offer accurate and diverse portrayals on television and in film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson also had himself a wonderful evening. He founded the organization Straight But Not Narrow following his appearance in the lovely 2010 film The Kids Are All Right, and since, the group has worked to become an ally for GLBT causes.

GLAAD might be more famous for making a fuss over people, situations and works of art it deems homophobic, but the group also serves as a vehicle to honor those who are making positive contributions. The annual Media Awards are a good example of that, and in addition to bestowing high fives, the event also raises millions of dollars to fund activities during the year.

A big congratulations to all the worthy winners.
