Alex Winter recently went to AMC to pitch a drama about a militia existing in the United States. Apparently, AMC was down with the pitch and bought the project, which is currently running with the title Rights of Bill, although if the project moves forward at the cable network that title may change. The former Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure actor will pen Rights of Bill with Steven Pearl.

People generally think of Alex Winter as the less famous half of the Bill and Ted movies, but he’s made a fine name for himself over the last few decades signing on for acting roles as varied as a guest role on Bones and the upcoming film Grand Piano, but also taking stabs at writing and directing. If AMC picks up the hour-long drama project, he’ll be able to add writing a TV series to his resume.

According to Deadline, Pearl and Winter’s project will follow a sheriff living in Wisconsin. When the sheriff puts together a militia in the area, he takes on the role of a lawman, as well as a person willing to cross the law. There doesn’t seem to be a futuristic aspect to the story, so I’m unsure how the militia thing will work, but it certainly sounds like a rollicking adventure story, and one that would be right up AMC’s alley.

TV Blend will keep you posted if Rights of Bill moves forward in the pilot pick-up process at the cable network.
