What NCIS Fans Need To See In The Season Finale, According To The EP

The end of the 2016-2017 TV season is fast-approaching, and many series are starting to amp up the excitement in preparation for finales. NCIS is gearing up for what sounds like a pretty action-packed finale for Season 14. A few members of the team will head into dangerous territory on a mission that will lead to a decision that changes their lives and culminates in a cliffhanger. Executive producer Frank Cardea teased this about what fans need to be sure to see in the episode:

And you will not want to miss the last five minutes.

The Season 14 finale will send Gibbs and two others from the crew to Paraguay. Once there, Gibbs will need to make a high-stakes call that plays into the epic cliffhanger that will undoubtedly have us all speculating our way through the months of hiatus. Frank Cardea's tease to EW that the last five minutes of the episode are not to be missed is promising, if somewhat vague, for what we can expect to close out Season 14.

CBS is undoubtedly hoping that the Season 14 finale will be enough to entice viewers back to NCIS. Although the show remains one of the top performers in primetime dramas, episodes have been scoring record lows in the ratings. The viewership numbers haven't been quite so disheartening, but they're still not quite up to where NCIS has scored in the past. If the season finale packs enough of a punch, there's a chance that the ratings and viewership could both pick up.

At least fans don't have to worry that the relatively low numbers will result in a cancellation from CBS. The network renewed the show through Season 15 last year, so Gibbs and Co. are guaranteed at least one more year of action. It should be interesting to see if what happens in the Season 14 finale pushes Gibbs toward the big change in his position that was teased earlier this year. An episode hinted that Gibbs might be promoted to NCIS Director in the not-too-distant future; if the NCIS brass is impressed with whatever he does in Paraguay, maybe it could be what pushes him to a new and higher position in Season 15.

We'll have to wait and see. At this point, I'm just hoping everybody survives Season 14. The finale will air on Tuesday, May 16 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
