We already have the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender TV show coming to Netflix to look forward to, and ATLA fans have probably already sampled The Dragon Prince by Avatar head writer, Aaron Ehasz. But the creators haven’t indicated that there are any other Avatar shows in the pipeline. So how are we going to get our next Avatar fix? Well, I have you covered. Sort of. Below is a list of TV show ideas that would be awesome to come next, so you can at least daydream about the possibilities, and I guess that’s worth something.
The Legend of Yangchen
The last air nomad Avatar in the cycle before Aang, Yangchen is often thought of as one of the greatest avatars of all time. She’s actually kind of the opposite of Aang, in that because of her hard work and effort, there were no wars for an entire generation after her death. Inversely, because Aang was too scared to be the Avatar and got stuck in an iceberg, there was the Hundred Year War as a result. In fact, she was so great, and the time of prosperity was so peaceful, that a lot of people think her successor, Kuruk (more on him in a second) had it too easy and ended up getting himself killed in the process. Bummer.
I know a lot of people would much rather have a Legend of Kyoshi series than Yangchen, but Kyoshi already has two excellent novels written about her, so her story feels a lot more filled in. But we don’t really know much about Yangchen, and it would be really cool to see what led up to the fight with the spirit, Old Iron. It would just also be cool to see another air nomad Avatar. It would add consistency since we already had a show about an airbender.
The Legend of Kuruk
Often thought of to be the worst Avatar (that is, of course, if the haters aren’t giving that title to my girl, Korra) Kuruk, the last waterbender in the cycle before Korra, is often thought of to be a massive disappointment since he died so young at 33. He’s mostly known for neglecting his duties in the pursuit of having fun, and many think he had it too easy after Yangchen’s time as Avatar.
But the thing is, everybody’s wrong. I won’t get too into it, in case you want to read the excellent Kyoshi novels, but we learn that Kuruk actually had a really tragic life, and that he wrestled with many spirits to prevent them from taking over the mortal world. And that’s the show I want to see! Plus, just like with Yangchen and Aang being airbenders, it would bring parity to Korra’s story since he was also a waterbender. And everybody knows that The Legend of Korra is the best thing to come out of the Avatar universe (Flame shield, up!)
Aang’s Team Avatar as Grown-ups
Probably the safest show (or maybe not), a lot of people would love to see the period between Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra when Aang and the gang were grown-ups. Yes, people could just read the fantastic comics, but those don’t really show them as adults. It just shows their further adventures as kids.
But we could see so much that’s referenced in The Legend of Korra, like Toph on the metalbending police force, or the work Sokka did with Zuko, and so on and so forth. Honestly, this is the show that I would least be interested in since I feel we learned enough already on Korra. But I know a lot of fans have been clamoring for this for a while, so I thought I would put it on this list.
A Non-bender vs. A Dark Avatar
Okay, now hear me out on this one. I know everybody’s favorite character on ATLA is Zuko or Toph (or maybe even Uncle Iroh), but my favorite character is Sokka. It’s because I find him the most compelling because he doesn’t have any bending abilities at all. He just relies on his wits (and his boomerang!), which I find super endearing.
So what if we got a show about a sort of Dark Avatar like we saw in Season 2 of Korra, but more like an Avatar who totally went rogue, and the only person who could stop him or her was a nonbender? It could be set way off into the future, and nonbenders could have a lot more ways to disarm benders. I don’t know, but I just find it really fascinating how nonbenders can coexist with benders, and what it would be like if they really did go to war, kind of like what we initially thought of Amon and his Equalist movement in Season 1 of Korra, but for good.
The Second Avatar
We learn about the first Avatar, Avatar Wan, in The Legend of Korra. Voiced by The Walking Dead’s, Steven Yeun, Wan helped bring balance between the spirit world and mankind, so he’s, uh, you know, a pretty important character. And when he merged with Raava, he was able to bend multiple elements, even though his first element was fire. So the first Avatar was a firebender. Which would mean…
The next Avatar would be an Airbender! Come on now. You now know how I feel about parity when it comes to Avatar. We had the last Airbender, and now I want the first Airbender. It would be cool to see the next Avatar in the cycle be born before all the tests that were used to determine an Avatar, and how that actually came about. I would personally want to see this series the most since it would really expand upon the world of Avatar. I’m actually getting excited just thinking about it.
And that’s the list. Honestly, Avatar fans will take anything (And then possibly complain about it like some do with Korra). But I want to hear your thoughts. What Avatar show (animated or live-action) would you like to see in the future? Let me know in the comments.
