Colt Johnson's trip to Brazil to see Jess Caroline was less than ideal, mainly because mother Debra "Debbie" Johnson tagged along for the ride. While Colt didn't seem to mind his mother's presence, tension mounted almost off the bat between Jess and Debbie, and the two had a blow-up at a family dinner that put a real damper on the trip.
90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? audiences watched as Debbie "accidentally" mentioned a family friend Colt had a romantic night with the following morning, which ultimately led to Jess blowing up on Colt. After watching all that go down, one viewer decided to take Debbie to task for her actions on social media and commented on the matriarch's Instagram post to ask her to "butt out" of her son's romantic life. The commenter said:
Leave Colt [alone], and let him make his own decisions. Butt out of his life. You act more like [you’re] his girlfriend than a MOM! I’m glad [Jess] puts you in your place all the time. Even with your stupid eye rolls, you deserve it. Someone has to do it.
It's a harsh criticism, but not exactly an unpopular opinion among 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? viewers. Debbie Johnson has a close relationship with her son Colt, and that relationship played a major factor in the collapse of his previous marriage with Larissa Dos Santos. Debbie has even been candid that she doesn't trust that Jess Caroline's love of Colt is genuine, and that's she's looking to use him for a way to get citizenship in America. For that reason, she did intentionally create friction between them in Brazil, and won't stay out of her son's life as she fears he'll make another bad decision.
Debbie Johnson had nothing to say in regard to the accusations she's acting like Colt Johson's girlfriend, but she did have something to say about the 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? viewer's thoughts on Jess Caroline putting her in her place.
I must [have] missed the parts where Jess keeps putting me in my place. Oh, I know, you were watching a completely different show. Of course that makes sense. Probably some cartoon. More your speed. Watch closely so you don’t keep missing things.
Regardless of what I may think of her motives or role in Colt Johnson's life, I'll always appreciate the unapologetic attitude Debbie has on and off 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?. Of course, Debbie's plan didn't fully break this couple up by the end of the trip, though social media updates have confirmed the couple has since split. Looks like Debra Johnson earned that handle "@SavageDebbieJ" after all!
